WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS!

Congratulations! You have just signed up for a course in the Great School of Athens.

Please let me introduce myself, my name is Socrates. I´m one of the most important philosophers of the Ancient Greece, where I lived between 470–399 BC. You may know one of my most famous disciples: Plato.

Today, I have chosen YOU to be my next disciple, to become a GREAT PHILOSOPHER. I will show you the school, your classmates and the method we use to create science.

THE SCHOOL...

This is a special school, we have no classrooms, no books, no exams. We learn by observing, reading and TALKING to each other.

During your time here, there are some things you should keep in mind:

1.- We learn by doing experiments (at home!), carefully following the scientific method, and writing reports for the rest to know our results.

2.- We work in groups of 2-3 people, and appropriate teamwork is rewarded (good task distribution, respect, collaboration,...).

3.- We don´t rush, however, we always hand in the work on time (pay attention to the due dates shown in the LEADERBOARD).

4.- Everytime you submit work, you will earn some drachmas (our greek coins). The more drachmas you collect, the higher your philosophical level will be, your mission is to become a GREAT PHILOSOPHER (see LEVEL-UP for details). We will have weekly markets, when you can exchange drachmas for tickets.

5.- There will be a SCIENCE FAIR at the end of the course, when you will show an experiment to your mates. There is a prize for the best experiment!!

...YOUR CLASSMATES...

You will be surrounded by brilliant philosophers. Greek philosophers were also scientists who observed and studied the world around them.

The Greeks estimated the size and shape of the earth, they figured out how a pulley works, they studied how the body works,... Many of the ancient Greeks' discoveries and inventions are still used today. [READ MORE IN: ABOUT.COM]
